A Patriarchal Blessing
from His Holiness IGNATATIUS ZAKKA I IWAS
[late] Patriarch of Antioch and All the East
Supreme Head of the Universal Syrian Orthodox Church
"Glory to God! Your Beatitudes, Your Eminences, Your Graces, the Reverend Clergy, and all the other distinguished Guests of the delegation from the World Council of Churches, other dignitaries, ladies and gentlemen. We have great pleasure in welcoming you all to our Saint Aphrem Theological Seminary here in Ma’arat Seydnaya, Damascus, on this occasion of the opening session of the WCC’s International conference on The Orthodox Contribution to a Theology of Just Peace. It is so joyous for us to be a part of the second consultation on orthodox peace ethics. Let us give praise, honour and glory to God for arranging a seminar by the World Council of Churches, the Institute for Theology and Peace and the Institute for Peace Studies in Eastern Christianity. And let us congratulate each organization and greet you with the heavenly peace of Slomo or Shalom. [...] On our own behalf and on behalf of all members of our holy synod and on behalf of our Syrian Orthodox Church of Antioch as a whole we express our sincere thanks to you all. We heartily thank the WCC and the organizers of this conference. It is an honor and a matter of pride for us to host this inaugural session of this workshop on just peace. And with your permission, let us inaugurate this session of the conference with the words of the prophet Amos: “Let justice roll down like waters and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream” (Amos 3:24)." (fragments from "You Shall Love Your Neighbor as Yourself," pp. 7-9 in Just Peace: Orthodox Perspectives edited by Semegnish Asfaw, Alexios Chehadeh, Marian Gh. Simion.
